Ice/Apostles conditions?

Postby KevinK » Thu Jul 01, 2010 12:31 am

Has anyone been up Ice or the Apostles lately that has pictures or info on the snow conditions up there? I'm mostly interested in the conditions of the NE ridge traverse/crux chimney and also the traverse to W.Apostle. I know that the route (especially the north facing chimney) is supposed to hold snow until late July but was wondering if it may have melted out early this year.
Mountains looked like fun
Climbed up to the sun
From a peak I got such a view
Forgot to hold on

I went up North Apostle yesterday and snow was not a problem. There are a few small patches of snow in the gully that you climb to the saddle between n. apostle and ice mountain. But these were low angle; I crossed them in trail runners without a problem. Other, steeper patches of snow can be avoided. From the saddle, the ridge up Ice Mountain is clear of snow. I'm not exactly sure where the chimney is that holds snow later in the year; I wasn't really looking for it. I have a few photos that I'm trying to figure out how to attach.

I traversed the Apostles this last Weekend (July 24, 2010). No Ice or snow to see on the NE Ridge of Ice or N Apostle's NW Ridge or the SW face of Ice. The refrigerator is snow free in the upper part.

At around 11;15 or so, as we were traversing the last bit of Ice to W. Apostle saddle, we saw a person in Red shorts, no shirt come flying off West Apostle down to the saddle - literally flying down West Apostle right out of Roach's Moccasin man on Dallas peak. He went out of view from us and was gone... I kept looking for him but saw nothing more. I figure he dropped down into Apostle basin in the gulley between Ice and West but couldn't see him when we got there... Was curious where this person went...
