Mosquito Range conditions?

Postby d_baker » Tue Nov 03, 2009 9:36 am

Has anyone been up 4 Mi creek rd lately?
Looking for info on snow conditions near Horseshoe or Sherman.
Snowshoes a must? Or can we get by without them?

Thanks,
Darin

I don't know about 4mi Creek Rd, but I hiked Sherman on Saturday from Iowa Gulch. Snowshoes were nice to have in places but not necessary--I hiked a stretch with some others who did not have snowshoes and they did fine. Gaiters were a must.

Thanks Boggy.
I think I'll bring snowshoes and make the decision at the TH (for Horseshoe).

I was up there yesterday (Wed)...Four Mile Creek Rd is plowed to Leavick site. You can get up to the gate at 12000' with a high clear 4WD, the snow is not deep and a lot of the road has no snow. The trail up to the peak is very slick in some places, and we chose to traverse a steep snowfield up to the saddle. After that it's a piece of cake. Weather was fabulous, no wind on the peak and minimal wind anywhere on the mountain. Take hiking poles/ice ax, gaiters, crampons or Yaktrax...too slick for just boots.
