The backpacking up on the other side of the park is incredible too, just tough due to the lack of water. We spent four days up there a few years ago and then climbed guad after. Saw two people the whole time while we were backpacking.

There is some water a ways up in McKittrick Canyon, which is beautiful in the fall. But the rest of that place is bone dry.

If you have the time, I highly recommend hitting Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands. We did a week-long trip last March and hit all three places. We were stretched for time so we only did a couple short hikes in Guadalupe but didn't see any evidence of snow during that time and would be very doable that time of year if it helps.
As a side note, we utilized the NM state parks on that trip and the ones we stayed at were EXCELLENT. Very clean and well-maintained. ~$10-12 to camp and the $5 entry is waived if you're paying for a campsite. IIRC, you have to pay the entry fee as well as the campsite fee when staying in CO state parks.

A big plus one to this post. Guadalupe is a fun hike, Carlsbad is worth the side trip and White Sands is an incredible place. Guadalupe Peak is one of the nicest parts of all Texas. Definitely the highpoint of that state 
. The hike is only 3-4 hours but has good views. Watch out for all of the poisonous critters on the trail. My son and I had descended in the dark and it felt like a Halloween spook house with all of nasty things slithering in front of us. Besides White Sands & Carlsbad, consider Sierra Blanca and Emory Peak if you are heading to that part of the country.
