Missouri Mtn or La Plata Peak for group - some 1st timers

Post by trektheworld »

Taking a small group on an outing - all young people in 20s and 30s with decent athletic ability to do a 14er. I've narrowed it down to Missouri or La Plata but can't decide. Which do you think would be the better hike in terms of the group having fun - not getting bogged down with endless road hiking or long dull stretches, etc. Also - which is easier to drive close to the trailhead and find dispersed car camping for 6 or 7 people?

I think La Plata would be the better choice, although either one would probably work for you. The standard NW trail right off of Hwy 82 is very easy access and the trail is really gorgeous. The Missouri ridge can also be a little tricky for some people who aren't as comfortable with loose gullies and a little more scrambling, but it's still not too bad. But I'd still recommend La Plata. Have fun!! :-D

La Plata's Southwest Ridge might be a good fit. The only tricky part is getting to the trailhead since there are a few spots where higher clearance is necessary. But there are some awesome dispersed camping areas along the road to the TH and the hike itself is very nice. If you had a couple of vehicles in your group that had limited clearance then you could drive those to your campsites and then shuttle those folks up to the TH in one of the vehicles with more clearance.
Where ever you are... There you are.
