Camping at Abyss Lake for Sawtooth

Post by Alpinegoat »

For our hike during Labor day weekend, we would like to camp near Abyss Lake and then get an early start up Bierstadt and Evans through Sawtooth. Would be very helpful if you can share info about camping options in the area. We would like to stay at higher altitude / alpine lake for fun and to get an early start.

Is there any restriction on camping near Lake Abyss. Is the risk of thunderstorm at Abyss (assuming normal summer t'storm pattern) a significant deterrent.

Are there other lake / creekside camping options that will allow hikes upto the 13ers in the area. Thanks much for taking the time to respond.

There is camping in the meadows around the intersection of Rosalie and Abyss/Scott Gomer trails, it's inside treeline with available water from the creek. Also camping in the lake just before heading into the basin with Abyss Lake in it, forget the name but the lake is right around tree line. Then you can also camp at Abyss Lake, guess you can potentially get hit by lightning there but considering it's almost 1000' below the summit of Bierstadt I'm fairly comfortable camping there. Plenty of grassy areas and fish in the lake.

Here is a link to some pics from an overnighter we did to Abyss a few weeks back: http://www.flickr.com/photos/thecrankym ... 506780510/
