General CO snow conditions

Post by gopilot »

I've got a handful of peaks left to finish and I'm wondering what the snow conditions are like so I can create a pseudo plan of attack when I arrive from Ohio.

What I have are:
San Juans: El Diente, Sunlight
Sangres: Little Bear, Lindsey, Culebra
Elks: N & S Maroon, Snowmass, Capitol.

I'll arrive in two weeks and would prefer to attempt Little Bear while it has snow. Any word on conditions there?

Thanks,
Scott

p.s. I'm also looking for climbing partners.

Southern Sangres and San Juans have a lot less snow than the northern peaks. I'd hit both of those ranges prior to Elks if you're looking for less snow. I drove by the Blanca Massif two weeks ago and it looked rather bare.

Little Bear's upper summit is icing up, particularly in the Hourglass. I'd give it a couple more days before you will have to wait for it to melt out completely.

Well, looks like I won't have the opportunity for a LB snow ascent this year. Thanks for the reports!

Radio said Independence Pass opens Thursday 2PM. There were some pretty deep snow cuts in a Denver Post picture last week.
I'll probably do an altitude conditioning hike near Summit Lake.

The 513 needs you to represent in those summit registers.

i hiked little bear last wednesday. conditions were prime in both couloirs but it is going fast. plenty of snow in the hourglass, but it is beginning to become hollow and icy. maybe has another week left in it. as far as the elks, they are still fairly covered and the winter routes on the bells have been a favorite of locals, though it is warming and melting significantly here as well. good luck, and happy summits!
