Mount Yale Southwest Slopes Fri 2013-04-19 (Maybe)

Postby vdavidoff » Tue Apr 16, 2013 5:30 pm

Mount Yale is the first 14er I ever attempted, the week before Thanksgiving last year. I made it to approximately here in exactly 4 hours then turned back due to a combination of weather and inexperience. I imagine there's much more snow up there now but I am not sure how much that'll impact my pace. I'm thinking this Friday might be a good time to give it another shot. At the moment the forecast looks clear with moderate wind.

I'm not 100% set on this yet, but if it happens, I plan to be on the trail at 6am. If you're interested let me know - I'd be willing to commit immediately if someone else wants to come along.

I was up there on 4/13 and you'll encounter some snow. I recommend snow shoes to get through the trees, once you're on the ridge it will be mostly blown off. It has likely snowed down there this week so things could have changed. The opposite ridge (right side) is the route, it was windy so I climbed 13,420' east of Yale, somewhat sheltered on this side.

It was dirt trail from the parking lot, turned to boot packed and easy to follow for a while. Once it gets deeper in the trees and the trail not as pronounced I put on snow shoes. I broke left from the true route and headed up the ridge. It was a nice climb, just a bit breezy up high. Enjoy the hike.
3 or 4 miles, can't be much further than that.

Thanks for this info and pictures. My plan is to follow the Southwest Slopes route, but pictures and descriptions of recent conditions from anywhere on the mountain are certainly helpful (you were on the Avalanche route, right? I am not horribly confused?).

After further consideration all involved so far are scratching this based on avy risk. Thanks to all who sent PMs with their opinions regarding the risk!
