Conditions Chicago Basin and Yankee boy early July

Post by annajack25 »

Does anyone have and experience/ information on conditions at Chicago and Yankee in early July? We are planning Windom ect at Chicago and Sneffels by Yankee. We have done multiple trips to Colorado but usually at the end July beginning of August. We realize its hard to be specific but we would like to know about water, snow melt, snow, need for crampons in early July in those areas?

I've been in Chicago Basin the past 2 years at the end of June-early July.
In 2011, a heavy snow year, crampons were necessary for Sunlight, Windom, and the Eoluses.
In 2012, a drier year, did not need them.

The snowpack is still shaping up. Hard to say for sure as of now what equipment would be needed.
I'd watch and ask for any updates towards the end of June.

I have been to Chicago Basin on numerous occasions throughout June through August.... As mentioned in the earlier post. It all depends on the snowfall for that year... I have been to Chicago Basin when crampons and an ice axe were a must and other times when they were not..... Keep an eye on the trip reports and you will get timely and accurate information.....

Sunny1 is correct in saying it's too early to tell. I was in Chicago Basin last year during the second week of July and everything had already melted. Despite this year being one of the worst droughts in Colorado history, March and April are our two biggest snow months. By the beginning of May, you should have a pretty good idea of what to expect.
