Sangre Avy Conditions?

Post by seth0687 »

Anyone have any better idea on the Avy conditions in the Sangres? the CAIC says they don't have information to give an accurate recent report, but that there was less snowfall and may be more consolidated. Any truth to this? Anyone from that area have any better info?

Cheers,

Seth

I do not have any current first hand information but I might recommend posting to the Northern New Mexico Avalanche Center page too; http://www.nnmae.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . It is the same mountain range atleast. I am sure snow conditions are variable between the Co portion of the Sangres and the NM portion but this will probably get you a bit more info. Additionally Bergstiegen and some other 14ers.com folks went up the Red Couloir, on Crestone peak, a month ago ; http://www.14ers.com/php14ers/tripreport.php?trip=13301" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . Snow conditions have probably changed but that is the most recent information I am aware of on this site. If you have the skills to evaluate stability (ie Level II avalanche certificate or equivalent knowledge), it is probably worth atleast heading that way and seeing what happens. Check Co's Snotel website for recent snowfall amounts and wind direction/speed, to get an idea of the potential for new slab development and what aspects it might be on. You may already know some or all of this, but if not, I hope this helps. The Sangres are hard to get good avalanche information on quite frequently. Sometimes you just go and hope after gathering what little information you can. Hopefully you will get better, more specific information, from someone else here, but if not, maybe this will help you a little bit. Good luck!

This is the best place for avy info in the Southern Sangres that I know of. Normally there are a few well done reports a week by some folks who seem to know what they're talking about.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help guys. It looks like we are going to hold off on the Sangre's for this week. The snow pack is just crazy this year, nothing is good right now.
