Denali Name Change
To continue the theme of recent Denali topics:
The article doesn't go into much detail, the title pretty much sums it up. Yes, there are probably more important things for our legislators to be working on these days, but I for one would like to see the name change. That said, I'd be surprised if this went anywhere.

Re: Denali Name Change
Maybe we could also re-name Quandary Peak to Bill Middlebrook Mountain?
We did not think of the great open plains, the beautiful rolling hills, and winding streams... as "wild". Only to the white man was nature a "wilderness".

My favorite quote from the comments section:
How many tourists have climbed MT. McKinley? Taking that away from them would be a slap in their face.

Haha, yeah I got a kick out of that one as well. "Well I guess I have to go back and climb Denali since my McKinley summit no longer counts."Derek wrote:My favorite quote from the comments section:

Re: Denali Name Change
C'mon now you crazy Alaskans... you all know that good ole' President McKinley was much more influential and important to the history of Alaska than the natives who lived there for 1000's of years...

Somewhere in Alaska, there has to be a mountaineering route called Seward's Folly'. I want to climb that.

Re: Denali Name Change
If they are going to name it after a westerner they should call it Washburn Peak. If they are going to name it after a liar, Mt. Cook. If they are going to name it with regard and elegance, Denali seems fitting.

I got a kick out of that comment as well! Tourists don't climbs Mt McKinley anyway and the people who climb it all call it DenaliLemmiwinks wrote:Haha, yeah I got a kick out of that one as well. Re: Denali Name Change
Having spent a season in Denali as an Park Ranger, I fully support officially renaming the mountain Denali. President McKinley never even set foot in Alaska and many Alaskans prefer to pay tribute to the native peoples of their land.

Suggesting Palin's Peak would probably get me permanently banned from this site...
