Montezuma, CO - legal to park on Santa Fe Rd?

Postby IHikeLikeAGirl » Fri Nov 16, 2012 2:48 pm

I read a TR and a town ordinance saying that public parking was not allowed in the town of Montezuma, CO (except by residents) and that parking is allowed at the Peru Creek parking lot (3/4 mi outside of town).

But reading Bill's (Aug 2012) Route Description for Santa Fe Peak, they parked at 10,800 on the Santa Fe Rd (sans ticket or towing).

So, out of curiosity:

Where are the boundaries of the "no public parking" ordinance?

Is it legal or illegal now to park along Santa Fe Rd at ~10,350 (where SarahT parked, in a small lot, in her 2007 TR and before the 2008 ordinance went into affect)?

Thanks!
Valerie

I was up there this summer and parked at Peru Creek just to be safe. Some nice fellow gave me a lift into Montezuma and I asked him about the parking and he said that they get pretty mad if you park in town. One fellow hiker I met on the way down from SF Peak said that he had parked on the forest road and I saw that there was sufficient space for parking where he was, but there are some houses down there too so you would want to be careful that you are on forest service and not private property. I would think that you would be OK, especially this time of year, as long as you aren't blocking the road.

I personally didn't find it too much trouble to park at Peru Creek and took my mountain bike with me to make the return trip easier. It is all uphill heading into Montezuma, but all downhill on the way back.

You should be OK anywhere above 10,400 or so. After the first hard right the road makes it's forest land and there are several pullouts.
So pleas'd at first the towering Alps we try,
Mount o'er the vales, and seem to tread the sky,
Th' increasing prospects tire our wand'ring eyes,
Hills peep o'er hills, and Alps on Alps arise!

Agree. Did Santa Fe a month or so back and parked on one of the several pull outs. No signage saying you can't and none of the homeowners (only a few houses) said anything. The road is steep and a bit rough in some places, but our Rav 4 made it fine.

Thank you everyone.

Am looking forward to getting my own picture of the famed "stop sign in a barrel", "Stop Hammertime"!

I'll probably have MC Hammer stuck in my head all day....

One more question:

Can I legally park at the Montezuma Rd closure?

That's at the turn off with Webster Pass Rd, correct?

Short answer is "yes" but I'm not exactly sure where you mean.

The Forest Service gate on Webster Pass Road is a ways in from where the road starts. I have parked near the gate a couple times. There are a few residences along WP road and as long as you don't block entrances or disobey the occasional No Trespassing signs you'll be OK.

I've also parked a ways up Deer Creek Road without a problem.

Finally, there's a large open area at the end of Montezuma Road, where it crosses the creek and becomes Deer Creek Road. I see cars parked there all the time.

There were No Parking signs last December where the Webster Pass Road spills out onto the main Montezuma Road. There were signs directing one to a "staging area" a little less than a mile away but further away from Montezuma.

I tried to park above the residences where the road heads up to Santa Fe but the road was snowed in. There were also a bunch of No Parking signs at the start of that road.

I hung around town for a few minutes hoping to catch a resident but it was pretty quiet. So with the clock ticking, we drove down to the start of the Peru Creek Road and parked there. I think the distance from the start of the Peru Creek Road to Montezuma is a wash when compared to the distance from the Webster Pass staging area to Montezuma.

Definitely recommend the loop. And don't be surprised if you have some canine company the whole day.

Thank you both!

Definitely want to do the loop. Was trying to figure out my options and seeing if a car shuttle would work.

Will probably drop a bike off at the Montezuma Rd closure and then park at Peru Creek Rd.

And yes, you are much faster than I, but....
How much time did parking at Peru Creek add to your time up Santa Fe?

Looking forward to the doggie companionship, I love dogs. Maybe I'll bring steak!

It is under a mile from Peru Creek to town with not much vert. I want to say 15-20 minutes.

Have fun, it is a sweet loop.
