GPS watch for running

Postby jomagam » Fri Nov 16, 2012 5:35 pm

Hello All,

I purchased the Garmin Forerunner 305 last August and want to buy something similar for my brother for Christmas. I was surprised to see that I cannot find it for less than $250, when it was $115 when I bought it. Technology is not supposed to be going up in price, right ? So what's a watch now in the low $100 price range that can show running speed and record a run. Heart rate monitor is optional.

I bought this http://www.walmart.com/ip/Garmin-Refurbished-Forerunner-405-GPS-Enabled-Sport-Watch-with-Heart-Rate-Monitor-Black/21128153 about 3 months ago, with a 2 year warranty extension for about $150. I have been very happy with it.

Yup, ordered it online and picked it up at Walmart. It's refurb, so be sure to get the extended warranty and keep the receipts.

The FR305 has been discontinued. A similar replacement would be the 310 ($250), 210 ($250), 110 ($180), or 10 ($130) depending on what you want to spend. The 405 has some issues.

What issues have you had/heard? I haven't had problems with mine, been using it for a while. (405cx)

I do know that a lot of people don't care for the touch bezel. Dont mind it myself.

The only problem I have run into is the edge of my glove will sometimes push the start/stop button. Bummer to run for ninety minutes and find your monitor stopped at four minutes. I have figured out how to lock the bezel, but not how to lock the buttons.

Battery life and the touch bezel.

I have the 305 as well and the only one out there right now I'd replace it with is the 910. Depends what you're looking for though. Battery life is key for me. My 305 has lasted up to 13 hrs. My husband has the 210 and it usually lasts about 4hrs. I've also tried the 410 and I don't like the bezel. The 910 is pretty pricey though, which is why it's still on my wish list.

i had once considered the same watch and noted the same thing - it was going up in price. i instead went with the timex run trainer and don't regret it for a moment (been using it for over a year now). dcrainmaker.com has extremely detailed reviews of all these devices should you be interested in geeking out over the pros and cons. :)
