crampons in July

Postby fsuhornb » Thu Oct 18, 2012 7:14 pm

Getting ready for my first 14er next summer and was wondering if someone could give me some advice. We're planning to summit Eolus during the first week of July and I'm wondering if we should plan to bring crampons and ice axes. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Is there an echo in here?

EDIT: I could have sworn I read the OP's question verbatim recently somewheres. :-"

Me thinks it's someone at the Golden shindig this eve.

I'd bring an axe, I don't think crampons are necessary. There is a nice snow slope but I didn't think it was steep enough for crampons.

My thought would be to see how the snowpack shapes up over the winter

I climbed Eolus near the end of June in 2009 and I used both crampons and ice axe. The snow portion of the hike wasn't too long and I could have gotten away with cutting steps, but it would have added a lot of time.

Trip report from that hike here.
