Class 3+ close to Fort Collins

Post by India Pale Ale »

While I can't imagine this has not been asked already, my searches have not come up with anything. Here or the other forums. I moved to FC from out of state earlier this year and so far I have just been using topo maps to find places to go.

RMNP is great, but if someone knows a good guidebook for scrambles there it would help me a lot. I am pretty familiar with my options in IPW.

But the main thing I was hoping for help with, is stuff that would take about a half day (or less) including driving. There does not seem to be many options, so I am hoping someone can help. I have been to the Greyrock area a few times. Same with Horsetooth and Lori. If anyone knows some nice scrambles or even must-do trails I would be very grateful.

Oh, and while I am asking, if there is any good spots to go while the wind is 50+mph, that would also be a big help. I wanted to do Ypsilon this week but I don't think I can handle the gusts.

Do you have Dave Cooper's Colorado Scrambles? There are a bunch of RMNP routes in there.

Excluding the Greyrock stuff. Here's some ideas:

8194 - on Glen Haven Rd on the way to Estes: http://listsofjohn.com/PeakStats/Climbers.php?Id=5061" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Gem Peak - http://listsofjohn.com/PeakStats/Climbers.php?Id=3995" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The Needles - scrambling opportunities, easy class 3. http://listsofjohn.com/PeakStats/Climbers.php?Id=3124" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Lots of opportunities in Red Feather Lakes area:

This one made me turn around. I need to go back.

8300: http://listsofjohn.com/PeakStats/Climbers.php?Id=4936" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Some other Red Feather ones:

Easiest route only 2+, but plenty of opportunities:

http://listsofjohn.com/PeakStats/Climbers.php?Id=4701" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Southwest ridge of this one was interesting:

http://listsofjohn.com/PeakStats/Climbers.php?Id=4873" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Lots of big rocks, long stretchy moves if you pick the right route:

http://listsofjohn.com/PeakStats/Climbers.php?Id=4681" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Fun route finding:

http://listsofjohn.com/PeakStats/Climbers.php?Id=4662" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Alexander Mtn is class 2, but only if you're on private property. Easiest public route is class 3 or more. Haven't done it yet. Let me know if you want to try that one.

EDIT: Manhead Mtn - short but sweet. Check it out when you're heading to Red Feather:

Oh yeah, this is a must do. My favorite views of RMNP.

I like Lily Mtn, Rams Horn Mtn, Kruger Rock a lot as well.

Thanks 49ers. I've bookmarked this thread.

Thanks a lot Screeman and 49ers. I will check out the book and for sure I am going to work on that list from you 49ers. That is more than I could have asked for. Yes I am interested in Alexander mountain. I know when it is windy in rocky it can still be pretty bad in that canyon, but I would be interested in giving it a shot this week all the same.

Thanks again for giving me so much to get done.

No problem. I pretty much learned all this stuff from a few of the Larimer County HP finishers and am just passing it on.

Derek, did you ever get to Turkey Roost? I'm hoping to get up there this fall.

Authors rock right behind horsetooth in Lory State park is fun. Just cut off the trail when you see the steep south east facing slope and find a route up. Some easy class 5 can be found but nothing over class 4 if you want it to be.

Vedawoo, Wyoming has excellent scrambling opportunities and is an easy drive from FOCO.

In the Estes Park area, check out the following:
Oldman Mountain (and the Cave of the Seven Bears)
Northeast Ridge of Prospect Mtn.
The Thumb on Prospect Mtn.
"Christmas Tree Mountain"
Anything on Lumpy Ridge
Jurrasic Park by Lily Lake
Eagle Rock
The Camel, Crosier Dome, Noel’s Knob in the Big Thompson Canyon
The Monastery on Storm Mountain
Window Rock/Castle Mountain
Popes Hill

In Allenspark area:
The Ironclads/Mt. Boner
North and South Sheep Mountains

In the plains:
East Pawnee Butte

The finest class 3+ scrambling in RMNP in my opinion is either McHenry’s Peak or Desolations Peaks. Check these out next summer!
