Sir George did well

Postby Tortoise1 » Sat Sep 29, 2012 4:48 pm

Sir George Gore came to Colorado in 1854 and pretty much all he did was kill wildlife, by the thousands, in the name of sport hunting. And for this he got a mountain range named after him, and an individual mountain, and a nice hiking trail, and a mountain pass, and a mountain lake, and a canyon, and a creek, and who knows what all else.

But here's the best part - he never even saw any of it, at least according to the sign above Gore Canyon. Then he went back to his estate in Ireland. I can find no record of any redeeming qualities whatsoever. Very strange story.

It's probably easier to spread that rumor than to go through a renaming process. Al Gore would be fine, or Tipper Gore, or GoreTex, Gore Vidal, Lesley Gore, Frank Gore of the 49ers - seems like any one of them would be better than Sir George.

Sir George was a "conservationist," just like Teddy Roosevelt. That's what they called hunters in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
