First 14er, Crag Trail questions

Postby Igrok » Tue Sep 25, 2012 1:00 am

I plan on camping Friday night and hitting the summit Saturday. My question is:

#1 are there any water sources on the crag trail? (I didn't see any on google earth)

I don't recall any water once you hit treeline (except for the restaurant/gift shop at the summit). You may want to take some extra since it is your first 14er. Pikes was my first as well and it took a long time for me to get to the summit from Devil's Playground.

At the beginning, below tree line, one stream crossing for sure, but you won't be out of H2O by then.
1-2 liters of H2O and you can refill at the summit.

I love the Crags approach!! Best of luck!

Remember to take some cash:)
This is the only 14er that you where you can take advantage
Of the restaurant at the top. Refill your empty water at the summit.
I had a great time on this mountain
It's a favorite

I agree with all of the above, but don't count on the summit house being open. I've hiked up there seven times, and the summit house was closed twice - in November and January. If you go during winter, check the train schedule, as they will sometimes be closed all day but open for a short time when the tourists arrive.

Only from patches of snow lingering from Tuesday/Wednesday snowstorms. Refill at store on top.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think about the summit house. I may even have a doughnut up there. :-D

If you run out early, you might be able to get something to drink from a passing car :-D

The last reasonable place to camp is about two miles in from the trailhead, if you're backpacking. Beyond that, the next good water source is at the summit (aside from passing cars). There is good car-camping along the road near the trailhead, even if you don't use the campground.
Some people are afraid of heights. Not me, I'm afraid of white blood cells.

With the weather rolling through, it looks like I'll be slushing through some snow come Saturday. Can it get any better? :-D
