Directions to Kilpacker

Postby denvermikey » Wed Sep 19, 2012 10:24 am

How can we get the directions to the Kilpacker TH updated? It is listed as follows:

From Telluride, drive south on Colorado 145 to Lizard Head Pass. Turn right onto Forest Road 535 and drive 5 miles to reach the signed trailhead entrance. Turn right and continue 0.1 mile to reach the parking area and trailhead.

This makes it seem that the turn for 535 is right at or near Lizard Head Pass when it is actually 5.3 miles south of the pass. Have spoken to several people that this was an issue for, especially after dark.

Thanks!

I actually had this issue this past weekend. The directions are definitely confusing. Found it on the first try by pure dumb luck, about 30 seconds before I was going to turn around and head back toward Lizard Head Pass.

It's also more than 5 miles on that forest service road. I don't remember exactly how far I measured it as, but there is a small sign on the right that directs you onto the "driveway" for the TH.

I had this problem last weekend too. Got to the Pass, didn't see a road and, like you, drove down the Cortez side. We were just about to turn back towards Telluride when I looked at the Navajo Lake TH page, wich has the correct information: go 5 miles past Lizard Head Pass.

Might be easiest to give all the names of the road that you turn on from CO-145.

Google maps, and street signs in the area call it Dunton Road (CR38). I'd been up there twice in the last three weeks - first time found it, second time missed it. :-k

I was up there this summer... here are my notes to Navajo Lake TH, which isn't too far from Kilpacker. The right turn onto FR 535 is *very* easy to miss!

From Telluride, take CO 145 South for 17.4 miles, over Lizard Head Pass, and turn right onto unpaved Dunton Road (CR 38 / FR 535). Drive 7.3 miles, past Kilpacker Trailhead, and turn right toward Navajo Lake Trailhead. Continue 0.1 mile to parking at the trailhead.

LOL, I had the same problem. I drove back and forth several times at the pass, because I forgot my delorme atlas. Then I decided it had to be south so I drove till I came to a road and it was it. From there on, no issues.
