2-3 day Backpacking Trip Suggestions For Indian Peaks Area

Postby cumminshunter » Mon Sep 17, 2012 9:32 pm

Looking for suggestions on a destination for a 2 or 3 day backpacking trip in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area.

Made the trek up to Mirror Lake, Crater Lake, and Lone Eagle Peak area this time last month.

After SEARCHING and reading a bunch of posts on here (thank you all!), I've come up with the following list of possibilities...

1. Crater Lake
2. Gourd Lake
3. Watanga Lake
4. Upper Lake / Stone Lake

I haven't been to any of the above except for Crater Lake, so any info would be much appreciated.

Just looking for suggestions or other tips...

Thanks in Advance.

Try Heart Lake and James Peak near the Moffat Tunnel. Very pretty and food hikes.

Watanga lake would be a shortish 3 day trip.

If you wanted to extend it a bit for more distance, I definitely recommend the Roaring Fork trail up and over the saddle between Hiamovi Mountain and Mount Irving Hale then down to Stone and Upper Lakes at the base of Hiamovi Tower.

The climb up to the saddle is grueling but the solitude and beauty of the area is well worth it. Carrying climbing gear will get you up the 7 pitch 5.4 route on the tower but there's also a 3rd class route on the west ridge.

You can also go in via the Hell Canyon trail, but it's pretty tough to follow (in my opinion).
