Lost (two) Sets of Hiking Poles on Little Bear

Postby lackerstef » Sat Sep 08, 2012 8:17 am

I was trying to help another user (tbaileymd) find there poles on Little Bear. I found them near a cairn close to the hourglass so I decided to leave mine in the same spot and grab them on the way down. For the life of me, I could not find them the way back. I believe I stayed too high on the ridge and followed another set of cairns.

My Poles: Black Diamond poles (Black with quick locks still set for 110cm).
tbaileymd's Poles: Yellow (or Gold) Black Diamond Poles.

In my effort to help return someone else's poles, I lost my new ones. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the effort, man, and best of luck to both of us! That cairn looked like the most obvious one in the world on the way up, and totally missed it on the way down.

Magical pole-eating cairn. Hopefully the weekend will bring them home. Off to Chicago Basin with a new pair...

Now that there are two sets of poles at that cairn, the next person to find them definitely won't carry them both up the peak. Instead it'll be only logical to leave their poles there as well to retrieve on the way down.

The best plan might be to grab both sets of poles and take then up to the bottom of the hourglass on ascent and leave them there until descending. On approach, the cairns sort of lead to an area a bit below the hourglass (100 ft?), where the poles are. Upon descending the hourglass, a clearer route is visible veering to the right above where the poles are. The natural tendency to want to get out of the way of rockfall led me to cut right too early and miss the poles.

Aren't most trekking poles collapsible? Easy to carry that way.

Same concept as dropping a pack or snowshoes for the summit push. At 14,000', every gram counts.

You're right. That's why I've switched to can beer.

Dang, we were up there yesterday and saw 2 sets of poles right at the top of the first gulley on the standard route, at about 12,600 feet. I wish I would have seen this post yesterday! I am sure someone will bring them back, they were in plain sight.
