I think I need to write down Kussum Kanguru's peak list. Pretty easy for 14ers- Castle.
But she has done a bunch of 13ers and a few 12ers. Grizzly Peak, Peak C, Grand Traverse, Sopris, Daly,...
A few more I forget. Maybe she needs to be on list of johns.

Sophie (4 1/2 years old) now has 25 fourteeners under her collar. You know it was a good hike when you have a worn out border collie back at camp.

5-year-old Australian Shepherd. Typical of a herding dog, he considers getting me to the top and back down his job, and he won't give up or let me out of his sight. If I even look at my trail runners, he punches the clock for another shift.

Malamutes are big, happy, goofy, clowns, love Mals and miss having one!

Looks you're a very active person so I recommend one of the working or sporting breeds, plenty to choose from. Before getting a dog do a good bit of self reflection and get a good idea of your preferences, personality, life style, home environment, basically anything that reflects yourself and try to match that to a breed. Hopefully you'll come out with a handful of breeds.

When you're ready to get a dog I strongly wish you to consider a shelter or rescue, both have way too many terrific dogs looking for a home. If you have to have a puppy look for a very reputable breeder and insist on looking at which dogs they've been breeding and getting feedback from a fair number of people who have gotten their dogs. I've come across dogs from breeders that have had some serious behavior and health/genetic issues. Puppies are damn cute but kind of a crap shoot, you never quite know how the dog will turn out, you can make some educated guesses about personality and health but you also never quite know how the adult dog will turn out and when you've had the dog for a year or two a breeders guarantee isn't worth much. With an older dog (shelter or rescue) you see more of what you'll get and don't under estimate the satisfaction you'll feel when you see that shelter/rescue dog's personality blossom under your love and care.

My preference is for Northern Breeds but they're obviously not the dog for everybody, if you want more info on what it's like to live with a Northern Breed drop one of us Husky or Mal owners and email, we generally love to talk about our dogs!

If you decide to go the rescue route check out the following site, they have a database of lots of animal rescue groups nationwide, you can narrow it down by species, breed, and state.

If you decide a Husky is right for you let me know, don't have a foster at the moment but likely will late Sept. again and I can recommend some rescue organisations, it helps a little to know someone as they help you find the right dog.

Aside from the one or two random negative posts, this thread has made my day! Taiga is a mountain dog, and always happiest to be outside, whether on the job in the field, or in her "time off" hiking 14ers and chasing me on a backcountry ski day.

Also, thanks to Bill for the dog post section (well, "pets" post.. let's not be discriminatory

Lastly, to the person looking for a dog, there is a thread on "best dog breeds for hiking" or something like that where basically every breed was touted in one way or the other. At the end of the day, you're looking for a "type": loyal, energetic, smart, athletic. This comes in many different shapes and sizes, and one way to get an idea is to volunteer to walk dogs at a local shelter for a month or two, and get to know what type responds to you best. I know that my rescue girl "found" me, and although she has some shortcomings, I couldn't ask for a better dog.

Never got this fella's name and, although you can't tell from the photo, he was having quite the chuckle observing various human silly walks on that knife edge.
