20 month old and 14ers

Postby nzeh » Sat Jun 23, 2012 9:20 am

Is their anyone that has taken their 20 month old child on a 14er hike? If so, could you give me a little bit of info about your experience and some things I might need to take or watch out for.

Thank you,
Nathan A. Zeh

Nathan,
No kids here, but here's a thread on young ones on 14ers that may help: http://www.14ers.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=32204

While i have never taken my kids on a 14er, they have regularly been on hikes/camping trips above 10k since they were 6 days old. My now 7 year old literally took her first steps in the Huerfano basin below Lily Lake. My 4 year old son shows some effects of altitude, but can hang in there. Keep a close eye on them, I keep a banter going when the going gets tough to moniter their attitude and when they start showing signs of discomfirt or that they're "done with the trip", turn around. No sense having them associate extreme discomfirt with such a wonderful past-time. Now that my kids are a little bigger they love the mountains, would rather go camping than a trip to Disneyland. Just the other day they made it to 13500 and were more than fine, I'd suspect that your 20 month old would be the same, just use sun protection!

HarknessHooligans wrote a trip report I remember reading with a 14-month old going up Grays. Might be of some benefit to you.

I took my 10 month old up Elbert in the baby bjorn. She did great and still alive! Do what you feel comfortable with.
