Waldo Canyon Fire (Colorado Springs)

Postby IHikeLikeAGirl » Sat Jun 23, 2012 1:40 pm

Just heard that there's a fire in Waldo Canyon and that Hwy 24 may be closed, but cannot find any information on that on the internet.

Can anyone confirm the closure of Hwy 24?

Is Inciweb.org the best website to get the most current info?

I heard on the news that 24 is closed. I'm at work today, in the Oracle building and can see the plume very well. I've been here about an hour and the smoke plume seems to have doubled in size since I got here.

I sincerely hope it's put out quickly. Luckily, it does not seem too windy today.

Very unsettling to see this right in your "backyard".

Not sure if it's the same thing... We tried getting into Mosquito Gulch about 45 mins ago and were turned around due to a fire "on the county line" up by mosquito pass by a sheriff. We asked about 24 and he said we should be able to get by going that way, but we changed plans and went up 9. For 24, we asked about going BV to Leadville.

No, that's not the same, Waldo Canyon is near Manitou Springs. Wow, so many fires at one time. I sure hope we get some rain soon.

Thanks for the verification Michelle. I too hope they get that put out soon.

I heard on the radio earlier that hwy 24 was closed but when I checked KKTV on line, they are reporting 24 is open as is the Gazette's website.

From my back yard... they're evacuating Garden of the Gods and other areas from here to Green Mountain Falls.

I thought I wanted nothing more than to get out of Texas, but now I want Colorado to stop burning so I have something to come back to way more. Damn.
I do hope this local fire to Co Spgs & Manitou gets under control without loss of lives and/or homes.

US 24 was still open as of about an hour ago. There are crews filling the parking lot at Waldo Canyon, but the fire appears to be a few miles up from the highway.

This is getting out of hand. I used to go hiking in Waldo Canyon quite a bit. Is it time to move further north? :(

Fires happen. It's an important part of nature's cycles.
