PDF export of TRs?

Postby Furthermore » Sat May 19, 2012 12:47 pm

With the recent closure of 14erworld, I have been in a bit of scramble to get a copy of my reports. Luckily, most of all of my reports were also posted here on the .com.

I was wondering if it would be possible to add a feature to export trip reports into a PDF document? or some other document? Not that 14ers is closing anytime soon but I would like to keep my own digital copy of my reports and use other exported reports for reference and beta. Most of my reports are generated in word and I've been having a hell of a time importing photos that correlate with my reports in a word document; however, I'm not exactly the most computer savvy. Maybe someone has a good suggestions for that?

14ers does such a good job of displaying reports and photos in a well defined layout that I think a PDF export would be amazing.

Anyone else agree? Disagree? Thoughts on how I can save my reports without the hassle of adjusting photo size in word?

Now we're talkin'!

Since I already have .PDF modules installed on 14ers.com (route exporting), I can implement that for trip reports. I'll add it to the My Reports page.

Thanks!

Great, now you've done it! I'm not superstitious, but I am somewhat stitious. I do like the PDF idea, though.

Agreed, and I think that's a great idea too.

That's cool. You could download trip reports to your computer for reference offline or whatever. Might make printing them easier as well.

Good idea!

Done. Look for the Image icon on the My Reports page. Nothing fancy, but the photos are included in the PDF. It's not the most flexible PDF conversion utility, so please post in the forum if you encounter an error when it tries to generate the PDF.

There's already a "Print" option at the top of each report - the formatting is a little nicer than what I have in the new PDF option.

What'd really be awesome is a epub download of trip reports :). I believe an epub is just a zipped-up html page, but I'm not sure how hard it is to generate such a thing in a good format.

And then the next step: a bittorrent download of all routes (already available for download I believe) and one for all trip reports.

Ok just brainstorming here :). Feel free to ignore.

I was able to manage to download some of my older trip reports. They were in a much simpler format. Would that make a difference?

The utility I'm using doesn't have a good way to ignore HTML tags that don't match up and it can happen with the trip reports. I'll try to tweak it tonight when I get home.

EDIT: I found one of the offending reports to test.

Thanks.
