Lost Creek Wilderness trail conditions

Post by pklotzbach »

Hi everyone,

My wife and I were planning on hiking in the Lost Creek Wilderness on Sunday. We were hoping to do one of our favorite loops in the southern part of the wilderness (Goose Creek Trail - McCurdy Park Trail - Brookside McCurdy Trail - Hankins Pass Trail). I'm guessing the snow has melted, but I was curious if anyone had been up there. I know that there were some pretty bad blowdowns this past winter, and I wasn't sure if this area had been impacted. Thanks for any updated trail conditions!

I'm probably going to be up in that area this weekend as well for some backpacking. I believe that conditions are likely to be pretty good except for on the Lake Park trail based on these:

Did an overnighter back there two weekends ago. I just stayed on the Goose Creek Trail, but up to the McGurdy turnoff the trail was in perfect shape (no snow or fallen trees).

Spent May 6th and 7th along the area of Goose Creek Trail. Talked to a couple who were finishing the loop, and they indicated that there was only a bit of snow to contend with in Lake Park. (They did the loop clockwise.)

The Goose Creek trail was dry as a bone. I'd assume you'll be just fine.

Pictures from the Goose Creek area over the 6th and 7th if you were interested:

Edit- I wouldnt meander too far off trail on northern aspects above 11K too much if you can help it...still snow there as of last weekend: http://www.14ers.com/php14ers/triprepor ... ki=Include

As Chris and I said in the linked thread, snow is a non-factor in the Lost Creek, all trails completely clear for running Phil. The only issue is that a lot of the seasonal streams have already dried up so plan water refills accordingly along Goose Creek as there wasn't any good water between when you leave Goose Creek and Reservoir Gulch.
If you take the Lake Park cutoff, watch out for the blow down, its pretty bad on the North side of that trail.
