Best Cali 14ers in Winter?

Postby Jordan D » Thu Mar 08, 2012 11:49 am

Heading out to CA to do Whitney in the next couple days and since the skiing in the US sucks right now I figured I'll just bag another 14er instead of looking for pow in 50F. Considering White Mountain Peak, a wonderful 50 mile stroll. Any others that may be a tad bit less mileage this time of year, but also relatively free from avalanche hazard?

I believe there's an uncommonly-travelled cross-country route up White Mtn that ascends from the base of the range. It'd be a beast of a day or two (comparable to C2C on San Jacinto or Shorty's Well on Telescope, at least) but probably your most direct route. Whitney might be manageable depending on your comfort level with mixed climbing, general snow levels, and how far the Whitney Portal Rd is passable right now.

Avy danger on Shasta is rated as low right now. Go ski it. It got skied earlier this week. When we lived there we didn't even pay much attention to any of the other 14ers because Shasta was such a playground. And this is the best time of the year to meet the Lemurians.

The entire Sierra is having a very dry winter, so hiking Whitney is a bit easier, except for the brush in the lower section of the Mountaineers Route. This fellow has been doing the Main Trail nearly every weekend this winter.

Here are several Mt Whitney Mountaineers Route trip reports on WhitneyZone:
_ _ Whitney MR, March 1-4
_ _ Mountaineers Route Feb 4th-5th 2012

White Mountain as well as the Sierra 14ers are less accessible in winter than Whitney is.
