I'm good to go on the weekdays!Alan Ellis wrote:Yesterday was a perfect day in the Wichitas with light winds, sunny skies, and about 70. I took a new climber to Mt. Scott and did most of the classics. If any of you locals can climb during the week, let me know.

Re: Wichita Mountains-Oklahoma
For those of you who have been here, how much time do you spend when you go? We're headed that way in a couple weeks and are wondering if we should try to camp/stay near there or just stop by for a few hours.
Any camping/hotel recommendations?
Thanks in advance.

Doris Campground is a nice place to camp in the park. Alan knows a good place in Medicine Park for lodging. I'll find out for you.
If you are not rock climbing, one day is probably good. You will definitely want to drive to the summit of Mt. Scott and hike the 2 mile trail from north to south in Charon's Garden Wilderness. You can also add the trail to the summit of Elk Mountain to that as well which is also part of the wilderness. A hike into the Narrows is also something that would be worthwhile. The Narrows is to the east of Charons Garden Wilderness. In the evening stop by the Riverside Cafe in Medicine Park for dinner. If you are there for two evenings, then a hamburger in Meers will do the trick, or you can eat there for lunch. Expect greasy burgers and beer but the atmosphere is really cool.

If you're into peak bagging (though these are not lofty summits) you could easily turn this into a multi-day deal, particularly in Charon's Garden. Sunset Peak. Mt. Mitchell, Granite Mountain, Twin Rock Mountain, Mount Lincoln and Elk Mountain all offer anything from easy hikes to Class 3-4 scrambles. Not to mention a lot of rock climbing. For a long time now, I've wanted to get a backcountry permit for the wilderness area and sort of do a moving camp as I tag some peaks there.
Because life's too short to be an indoor cat.

There is a nice bed and breakfast immediately outside the east side of the Refuge. http://www.stardustinn.com/greenhorn1 wrote:For those of you who have been here, how much time do you spend when you go?
