Polar Star Hut

Post by tylermacguire »

Has anyone been up to Polar Start recently. I am looking for any information regarding conditions on the way in/out and if there is anything skiable up there.

Thanks,

Tyler

I was up there on Sunday, 25th, I drove my Jeep to Fulford with no problems, the road is snowpacked, but in good shape, I have old bald tires as well. There was tire tracks going past Fulford, but I did not go any further in the car. I skinned up the Nolan Lake trail to Polar Star, and there is snow for 99% of the way, a few dirt patches, and several trees that are over the trail, nothing major, just a bit annoying as they would normally be covered by snow. Even with the bare spots, I was able to keep my skis on the whole way down, with a few sketchy turns b/c the "skin track" is only a few inches wide in places. As far as skiable, I did not go up above the hut as it was just a day trip, but between Fulford and the hut, I would say the average snow depth is around 20", depending on apsect, some of the south facing stuff, which is most of that trail, is pretty thin to nonexistent, and mostly unconsolidated facets. The normal skin track heading up from the hut was in, but the folks at the hut said that it was pretty thin up there too. It was a beautiful day though and a nice afternoon sitting on the deck at Polar Star. Hope this helps,Have fun!

I spend a lot of time near Fulford during August and September and have never made it to Polar Star. I am in for a winter trip however I do not have skis only snowshoes. There are a couple of shops in town that I have rented skis from before. I would be in for a trip with about a days notice if anyone would be interested in something up to Polar Star or around Fulford.
