NEW 3D Route Tours w/Google Earth

Postby BillMiddlebrook » Sun Dec 11, 2011 12:14 pm

After a few days of dizzying Google Earth work, I've finished adding 3D Google Earth tours to the 14ers.com route descriptions. The tours will open in your browser thanks to the Google Earth browser plug-in (which you'll be prompted to install if using for the first time). Each tour contains a 3D tour of the route line and markers for 14ers, 13ers and trailheads. Links to the tours can be found in a couple of places:

1) On the route list page for a given peak/group, click the Google Earth Image icon:

2) When in a route, click the Maps tab, then the Route Tour link. Use the Image to see the tour in a large window:

Here's a screen shot of a tour - when you open one, click the "Enter Tour" button to get things started:

Notes:
- Google Earth isn't exact so the lines rarely line up perfectly with trails you'll see on the satellite imagery. Also, to limit the size of the tour files, the route lines use a subset of GPS points obtained from climbs - another reason why lines will not always match roads or trails seen on the image.
- The GE plug-in doesn't work on some older browser versions. If it doesn't work for you, I'm sorry about that.

Enjoy!!

Wow, thanks so much, Bill! Another great feature on a site filled with great features.

Keep up the good work and I promise to keep spending a ton of money on gear through the front page links :D

j/k of course, I would spend too much on gear either way! Thanks again for all you have done for the community Bill :)

Sounds pretty cool. I've been using Google Earth for a while now to preview mtn hikes....this might just be the next step in that evolution.

BTW, most of the 14ers.com Google Map/Earth tour pages require you to be logged into 14ers.com with your forum id/password.

I had to do this because Google is implementing daily quotas on their maps API.
