Are there any trails up through that valley? That would be a great "across the park" hike I bet if there was. I'm sure it would be a multi-day trip, and I'm guessing it would be at least 10-15 miles. I'm aware of the trails that come over from Milner Pass, but I think they run up more towards the north. When your up very high like that, the terrain below seems to smooth out. Then every little hill, or valley looks like it would be a nice trail hike. I've been lucky enough to get out to the RMNP three times now, and I honestly can't say I'm done exploring there yet.

Kind of

Another great "across the park" is Bear Lake to Grand Lake with an overnight at Lake Nanita or Nokoni. No campsites right there but there is a backcountry zone nearby or established sites along the North Inlet trail. We did this about 10 years ago or so and it's still one of my favorite outings. Bring your fishing pole for Lake Nanita.. trust me.

Floyd has it right -- there's backcountry access and certainly some improvised trails, but nothing official. Going over Boulder Grand Pass to Lake Verna is a nice treat -- it's about 3.8 miles between Thunder Lake and Verna Lake, where there are established trails. If you have good conditions, this is easy off trail navigation because you just follow the chains of lakes to the established trails.

As a side note, a wonderful traverse I've done in spring conditions has been over Rogers Pass which essentially goes from the East Portal of Moffat Tunnel along Jim Creek to end in Winter Park. I've also done the traverse by going farther north and climbing from Arapahoe Lakes over Radio Beacon Peak and into Winter Park as well. the days are long but not terribly long, about 12 miles and if you're on skis/snowboard the west side of those mountains are fun!

BTW: here's the free map/guide for Alice and Tanima :)

Thanks. That map is exactly how we did Mt. Alice last year, except we didn't do Tanima Peak. I didn't know it was there. Now I have some new ideas on some trail hiking in RMNP.

Tanima doesn't look like much, especially from the summit of Mount Alice but it's actually a cool little summit with an exciting "red carpet" of boulder hopping to the top. The aforementioned views of the Moomaw Glacier, The Cleaver, Eagle's Beak and Frigid Lake are a real treat. :)
