Muir Pass Beta
Good morning. We are heading to do the Evolution Loop early next week. I have HEARD that around Muir Pass there is 5 miles worth of snow/ice to cross on the JMT. Does anyone have any beta about this? I will call the Inyo rangers later this a.m., but curious to see if anyone here might know. Thanks.

Check out this yahoo group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/johnmuirtrail/
Folks are continuously posting conditions updates on there.
Last year we hit Muir Pass around the 3rd week in July and had a couple miles of snow on either side of the pass... so maybe like 3-4 miles total. This year that area obviously got a lot more snow, but its had a few more weeks to melt. The trail slope angles are pretty mellow in that area, and there will definitely be a staircase to follow. Its a lot of fun and a beautiful area! Have fun!

Re: Muir Pass Beta
Well, we did it. Did a couple of little warm ups in Yosemite (North Dome and Tioga Peak) then down to the North Lake to South Lake Loop. We cut it short and cut out some high water crossings by going through Lamarck Col (which, with 10 and 11 y.o. girls was a bit of a challenge), and had a hoot of a time crossing all the ice cups there as well as around Muir Pass. Here's a pic from Wanda Lake:
And here's a golden trout caught on Darwin Bench (and released):

Wow, great photos! That is such a cool area... hoping to go back up there next summer w/ my Dad. He is itching to catch some Golden Trout!
