Re: Dogs on 14ers
Nothing worse than horses sh**ing all over the trail. Had to deal with that on the way out from Ice mountain and was ready to lay down some punji sticks for the next one.SkiBikeClimb99 wrote:What about pack animals?
- A mountain is not a checkbox to be ticked
- Alpinism and mountaineering are not restricted to 14,000 foot mountains
- Judgment and experience are the two most important pieces of gear you own
- Being honest to yourself and others about your abilities is a characteristic of experienced climbers
- Courage cannot be bought at REI or carried with you in your rucksack

For sure!!! Was dodging some equine bombs on the way down south colony recently.
Some of the front range trails are just as bad at times. If I have to pick up my dogs crap, why shouldn't they have to pick up their horses' crap?!

Glad I'm not the only one who despises "Horse Cairns".

One excellent argument for bringing your dog along on a hike is that it really ticks off the equestrians, and I have to admit that makes me pretty happy.

Wow, it appears I struck a chord here. For the record, I don't have a dog or horse and I certainly don't drop sh*&ts in the middle of the trail. Sorry for getting ya'll stirred up here.

Imagine if all you had was 90 years in the sun and then its darkness forever.

Re: Dogs on 14ers
A little historical perspective maybe.
Not that I'm a big fan of horse crap, but:
Horse packers (with their dogs) have a much longer history in the high country than backpackers, hikers and climbers.
My first adventures in the Sierras in the sixties found way more horses than hikers.
Of course it's the other way around now.
Back then I think they had the same disdain for backpackers as we now seem to have for them.

I hate big ol' piles of bear sh&t on the trail, especially in good berry years -- all purple and seedy.
