Ok before the storm begins on this thread........Elberts east ridge route is pretty mellow for dogs. Now an 8 month old german shepperd is still growing and their bodies are still in the developmental stage. A long route with talus/scree and above timberline might be a little much for your young puppies.

Just so you know I didn't take my dog up a 14er until she was well over a year old. She's climbed half the 14ers now.

I have seen dogs on top before. At 8 months old you just want to make sure they are leash and/or 'come' trained. It is not a technically difficult route, but fairly long. Not sure if 8 month old pups have that much stamina...

100% agreed!!!

As much as you want to take you dog up; and trust me, I know that feeling, wait. Dogs don't know how to stop and they will hike until their paws are bloody and then limp just to be with you. Therefore, you need to be the smart person. Adjust the dog to hiking and rocks, etc.

We just took our dogs up Mt. Elbert's northeast ridge two weeks ago and they did fine... very mellow. The top still had some snow on it.... but no major scree or anything to contend with (at least for us).

I took a Pomeranian and a Shih Tzu mix (he's signed in as a MutTzu on the register) up Elbert last year. Guy I was dating at the time took a major ego hit when they summitted like the champs they are and he turned around after the last false summit. If my fluff ball can make it, I think a couple German Shepards who've had training hikes will do just fine.
