Fourth attempt at Everest Summit is about underway

Postby IHikeLikeAGirl » Fri May 20, 2011 8:17 am

For those whom have climbed with or met Alan Arnette, or are just plain interested:

Alan is at the South Col, had high winds, but they were scheduled to die down and his group of 6 (with IMG) are set to depart for the summit at 9p Nepal time, (9:15a MT, I think). If all goes well, he should summit late in the evening MT.

He sent out a garbled audio dispatch, but for the discernible parts, he sounded great (strong, healthy, and mentally prepared).

This is Alan's 4th attempt. His best effort prior to this, got him to 27,500'.

I wish him much success and safety on his attempt tonight and tomorrow morning!

Here are Alan's SPOT tracks (let's hope he remembered to turn it on today  ):

I have been tracking his progress on FB and knew they were headed out today but wasn't sure of the local time. Thanks for the update! He's on the way!

A note from Alan's wife - the team left 3.5 hours ago and are on their way. Climb On Alan!

I've been checking his blog every day. Great cause, great man. Go get 'em Alan.

Depending on how accurate SPOT is, looks like he cleared "The Balcony" and is making good progress. :)

Next time you talk to Alan's wife, (and I'm sure she knows this, but) please tell her that so many people are sending their best his way and following his amazing adventure and wonderful cause.

I have been following his spot tracker all day. Love watching the progress and trying, keyword trying, to imagine what he is going through.

So, from what I know about Everest it looks like they headed out pretty early, or are making really fast progress. Looks like they are going to summit before sunrise! I guess that will make for a nice "warm" descent.

If they keep pace, it looks like they should summit within the next 1.5-2 hours. Best of luck and sending good vibes for a safe descent!
