Operation Pilot Fish

Postby BillMiddlebrook » Tue May 10, 2011 12:25 pm

FYI

Since 14ers.com gets a lot of traffic, there will always be those that try to take advantage of it - part of my job is to keep our site from feeding parasites. So...

In an attempt to reduce spam, I've implemented some stuff to handle spam forum registrations. The most popular tactic used by spammers is to register and simply place a url in the Signature area of the user profile or place a spam link in a forum thread. My changes will trap and remove some of these accounts.

Additionally, I've included the use of NOFOLLOW tags on all signature urls and many other user-posted urls throughout the site so Google and other search engines will no longer index these links through 14ers.com. This will be transparent and include links in forum threads, signatures, trip reports, etc. The links will work but will no longer be indexed by search engines.

I have more to implement and would like to get back to the times of open forum registration on any day, not just select days.

More to come...

Seems like it makes sense, but what will disallowing google indexing do for you? I guess I'm not following (no pun intended). Har Har.

It will prevent spammers from using the popularity of 14ers.com to promote links and products in the search engines.

I'm also adding some by-country registration checks to try and weed out some of the spam registrations that come from other countries.

If you ever decide to go on the offensive instead of playing defense, be sure to call it Operation Candiru.

Ha!
Some spammer from China who didn't fit into the new code. I saw him register last night and figured, hey, not everyone from China will spam the site. Right? WRONG!

Would be kinda funny if I banned all of China.

Kinda poetic, actually.

Not that I have anything against the Chinese people, but the government -- that's something else altogether!

Actually, Chinese mountaineerng input has the potential to add many fine tales to the site.

Still Bill, you do what you must to protect the site - good day.
Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatever state I am, therewith to be content - Paul the Apostle.
Good day.
