What is Colorado's most isolated/exotic peak?

Post by timf »

Count on me to think of an oddball question like this and perhaps isolated and exotic aren't synonymous.
So what would you consider to be Colorado's most isolated/exotic mountain?

Not necessarily to find an equivalent or comparison, but in Wyoming some might say the likes of Gannett Peak qualifies.

So what about Colorado?
Rio Grande Pyramid?
The Chicago Basin 13ers?
Mount Oso?
Snowmass Mountain?
A letter in the Gores?

As far as Alpine peaks, I'd probably say somewhere near Jagged (although not the least visited), although nothing in Colorado is anywhere near Wyoming in isolation. The train might make Oso (or another peak nearby) a tad bit more isolated that Jagged if you count it, but not more exotic.

Yeah, Hagues is pretty remote. Gotta love that 8-9 mile hike out after the Mummy Mania.

Some of those Gore peaks aren't necesarily remote as the crow flies, but have some damn long approaches, specially on the east side (thanks to private property issues). Slate Creek drainage pretty much requires a pack in, unless you really enjoy torturing yourself. Peaks L,Q,R,S,T,X,P and J are all anything but straightfoward to reach.

exotic - "attractive or striking because colorful or out of the ordinary" - using this definition, my pick is Vestal Peak. Very striking, remote, with an extended class 4/5 route (Wham Ridge). I would love to climb that one someday!

All excellent choices! Vestal, Hagues, but I think Jagged is maybe my all-time-favorite remote and "exotic" peak. Wow.

Cool topic!
There are quite a bit of possibilities, so I'll list a few for both:

Remote:
Rio Grande Pyramid
Mount Oso
Summit Peak
Storm King Peak
Jagged Mountain

Exotic:
Vestal Peak
Arrow Peak
Jagged Mountain
Storm King Peak
Peak C
Lone Eagle Peak
Pigeon Peak

I know looking at all the grenadier centennial 13er pictures in Roach's book thinking how crazy some of them look.
I then remember in Chicago Basin (alas I only did N. Eolus while with some popular cohorts of yours go figure!) seeing all of them first hand and had to pinch myself because they looked so surreal. Definitely one of those "Oh my God!" moments. Definitely have to go back to finish some business there.

If you want to get away from the alpine summits I suppose some places in or around dinosaur may be as isolated as anything in the state and definately exotic. The area around outlaw arch is supposed to have multiple rappels in and very difficult to get out of.

Vestal and Arrow certainly fit your criteria. Very isolated and stunning to look at. Vestal's Wham ridge is one of Colorado's outstanding alpine routes, long, easy to moderate climbing, and decent rock. Enjoy It !!!! You won't be sorry.
