Cell Reception Pages - ADDED

Postby BillMiddlebrook » Sat Jul 31, 2010 5:50 pm

After several requests I finally got this one done! While it's not perfect, it gives us a way to log cell phone reception on Colorado 14er summits, 13er summits, trailheads and other key locations like popular high-camp spots. I know there will be people that say "hey, what about coverage 200' below the summit of Mt. Harvard?" or something like that. I'm afraid we'll have to stick to summits, trailheads and other key locations. If you have a good suggestion for an "other" location, please PM me; I can update the "other" list at any time.

Cell Reception (Main Page)

I'll be adding more functionality to it soon and hope to add some nifty reporting at some point. I'll also start tying the info to route description and trailhead pages.

Also, if you encounter any bugs in the new pages, feel free to post here or PM me.

Feel free to start adding cell reception entries so we can begin building a set of data.
Any registered forum user can add entries.

Thanks!

Added a few, I'll continue to fire up my phone and take note of the reception on summits.

Bill -- maybe you could add a "Trail" location as well, at least for each standard route if not every route on the site. Users could fill in specific location gaps in the comments section, such as "reception at saddle and on ridge, not below ridge or in trees." For example, this weekend on Shavano as the clouds grew vertical late in the morning, I was able to use Verizon Wireless 3G to check radar and satellite images up to the 13,400 ft. saddle (but not beyond until the summit) as part of my weather analysis. I found this very useful and would love to know which trails have this capability. Thanks!

I'm not sure "trail" would be specific enough and this probably wouldn't give us data that's reasonable for reporting, etc. Specific milestones work better. The best thing I could think of if we're going to add something at the trail level would be "tree line."

Monday morning bump...

If you tried your cell phone on top of a 14er this weekend, we could use your input!

Cell Reception (Main Page)
Cell Reception (Add Entry)

Thanks!!!

this is a cool idea. I have to admit i've never thought about making a call from a summit, but maybe sending a couple pictures from the top will make a few people super jealous!! I like it

Would it be possible to click the column headings to sort the list? Or add the service provider to the Selection Criteria dropdowns at the top? Doubt I'll be planning any climbs based on summits that I can make phone calls from, but it's definitely nice to know. Thanks for another great resource!

You bet!
That's one of several things I'd hope to get to soon. Kinda like the column sorts on the Trip Report list page.

I'll be working on the Cell pages through tomorrow.
Thanks!
