Status of Mt. Bross

Postby BillMiddlebrook » Sun Feb 28, 2010 1:57 pm

May, 2009: The "loop" route from Kite Lake has been reopened. This includes Democrat, Cameron, Lincoln, a bypass just under the summit of Bross and back to Kite Lake. There's a spur off of the loop trail that provides access to Bross' summit, but it's considered closed. If you use it, please keep it to yourself and respect private property. The CFI has done trail work on the loop route and will continue to to do so and install more signage.

Here was the re-opening press release from 2009.

PARTNERS ANNOUNCE OPENING OF LINCOLN-DEMOCRAT 14ER TRAIL ACCESS IN PARK COUNTY

FAIRPLAY, Colo., May 29, 2009: After four years of cooperative efforts, the Mosquito Range Heritage Initiative (MRHI), Colorado Mountain Club, Colorado Fourteeners Initiative, private land owners, Town of Alma and the U.S. Forest Service-South Park District announce a conditional June 1 opening of the "14er" trail from Kite Lake to Mounts Lincoln and Democrat.
Based on trail work completed to-date, private land owners have agreed to a conditional summer 2009 access to Mounts Lincoln and Democrat.
Only the approved access route from the Kite Lake trailhead is open.
The agreement includes continued efforts to educate hikers about potential mountain dangers and the need to respect private property.

"This is a trial opening," emphasizes Cara Doyle, MRHI Executive Director. "Continued future legal access to these two popular Park County peaks will hinge on hikers' respect for private property and willingness to stay on the designated and signed trail. If people do not stay on this designated trail, we could lose this privilege."

I am not a novice hiker, but I am new to Colorado. Is Democrat, Cameron, Lincoln, and Bross doable in a day? Can you recommend the best trail head?

Yes it is an easy loop to do all four at once. I think most people do all of them at once. It is only about a 7 mile loop

Kite Lake is the best trail head.

Absolutely doable in a day, doable in a few hours actually. Be aware though, that the summit of Bross is private property. Summitting Bross is technically trespassing.

Thank you for the responses - very helpful.

Another question - can you recommend any other routes in Mosquito or Sawatch that are doable in a day that have two or more 14ers?

Look at the route pages in the Sawatch range - it shows which ones are usually done as a combo. It also shows their mileage, altitude gain and difficulty - that way you can decide which ones are "doable" (since we don't know your experience level).

Have fun.

De-Cal-Li-Bro is the best order too do them in from Kite Lake TH. The loop section back, under the summit of Bross is by far the longest, and worst part of the whole day I thought. Man was it was fun though... I did over half the loop in a 50mph+, white-out blizzard, and had the time of my life. Don't forget to pay the 3 bucks if you stay the night.

I think $3 is the day use fee. IIRC, the camping fee is $14.
Life is too short to pay full retail for outdoor gear!

If I remember correctly there is a self pay kiosk at the Kite Lake TH.

Are all the 14er finishers guilty of trespassing when having summited Mt. Bross?

Well......not if we summited prior to the closure. Some of us have been around a while.
