I agree that it would be nice if somehow it could narrowed down a bit with some of the more obvious non-winners eliminated or maybe have a revote of the top ten vote getters. A fun contest either way.

Why doesn't the Middlebrook household pick the "top 20" or 12, or whatever you want to call it, and then post each of semi-finalists for the masses to peruse and vote on? I think Bill's seen enough of them to have a good idea of the really good ones and most of us would agree with the starting point.

If you leave it to us (the interest 500 to 2,000 14ers) to pick the winner from 300+ photos, the winning picture may receive only 5 votes.

It wouldn't really be a forum contest then- and I doubt Bill and co. wants to be the judge.

Yeah you're right, and most photos won't get any votes at all (including mine- I'm expecting zero votes and entered just for fun!), but it's great to let the people pick and let the best voted photo win!

On American Idol, America's best Dancing Cat, and whatever other shows that are out there that have an "Audience Participation" quotient the judges first whittle the competition down to a manageable number of GOOD choices, otherwise there'd be 10,000 contestants being voted on by 5,000,000 people... That idiot Sanjaya may have won in that circumstance! Some people need to feel the pain of the cut, including me if I'm so not-chosen, to respect the skill level (and luck - let's face it, the marmot licking the lense is just lucky...) of those who are chosen to be in the semi-finals.

Yeah I don't disagree- just doubt you'll get Bill to officiate. You'd need a volunteer or someone to trim down the field. perhaps you could volunteer to do that?

just have 2 voting periods. preliminary and then the final. 20 pics with the highest votes get into the final round.

Just explain to my wife why I MUST spend even more time in front of the computer than she believes I already do (and have her agree), and I'll do it.

What's the story on your avatar Lobo? Interesting photo- looks like a person anywhere from the 1920's to the civil war era.
Just curious...
