There is a scenic and pleasant alternative for Columbia- from 3 Elk creek TH. If you want to avoid the crowds and enjoy a gentle ridge hike this way is much more enjoyable than the std route. Once you leave the trees and gain the ridge it's a mile or so of a scenic stroll up high on a gentle crest and easy walking, so have good weather before attempting. I enjoyed the views on Mt. Hope hike and summit also (by twin lakes), and it has good trails coming in to the pass from both sides I think.
