What's still skiable?

Postby pioletski » Tue May 26, 2009 11:56 am

Hey kids. Seems there are a few of us still swingin' away at the ski descents this spring, in spite of the magical disappearing snow. Can we share some beta about what peaks are still skiable from the summit? I have been to the following recently, and (with a little creativity) was able to get a summit ski:
Torreys (NW couloir, 5/25)
Democrat (Nordwand, 5/16)
Missouri (N face, 5/15)
Lincoln (5/12?, Georgia Chute - the Russian is dry)
Got a close look at Holy Cross 5/18, lots of snow up high but large bare areas lower down
The greater danger, for most of us, is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low, and we reach it.

Skied Massive yesterday from the summit and got a good look at Elbert, which is definitely still in. Skied Evans on Saturday from the summit also, Bierstadt is likey in. I would imagine some lines on Columbia and possibly Harvard are still in, as well as north faces on La Plata and Missouri. Based on some recent TR's Democrat and Lincoln are likely in, as well as Castle/Conundrum, and North Maroon. Can't speak for anything down south but I would imagine with these rain/snow showers and colder temps, there will still be a good amount of skiing available on the 14ers into June...

I haven't been down there but I'd guess Lindsey is still in.

Waiting for the update but I'd think Longs still has some

Holy Cross should be holding as well for the road opening. I saw it a week ago and it looked stacked

I couldn't see Lindsey last weekend because of the clouds, but there is quite a bit of snow left in the Upper Huerfano River Basin (below Lily Lake).

um, head to the Never Summers. I have a picture, but its easier to just describe what I saw. Its completely blanketed with white, get on it. Then again, there are no 14ers or even 13ers there, so I guess there is no point in checking them out, right?

To chime in with what Benners said bout Evans, I'd say we got the only good run of the season, since everything we skied over is now exposed rocks. Definately bring your rock skis if you do the line right down the North Face.

There was enough snow to ski the NE face of Castle, but very thin (but no dust, which was the case for most northern aspects).

I've heard the IPW still has plenty of snow for an enjoyable descent.

Grays/Torreys obviously does too. I can speak for the Lost Rat and you can ski to within 100-200 yards of the car. Dead Dog you'll obviously have to take them off for a bit, but it looks filled in as well.

lordhelmut, any chance you could post some Neversummer pics -- there are some lines up there that have been on the list since before I knew there were 14ers.

Castle conditions:

We skinned up Montezuma Basin and climbed the standard route Monday. Skied the east face with 4-8 powder. There are still a number of routes in down the east face.

The north face direct is in for those with some imagination and should be for a little longer.

The north couloir can still be linked for a summit ski, but is covered in recent (5/22?) avi debris for most of the path.

Conundrum conditions:

Conundrum couloir is still very wide and looks tasty. No sign of avi debris underneath as of 5/25. Easy access around the cornice to get in the couloir. Someone please go get this soon.
