14er Routes + Google Earth!

Postby BillMiddlebrook » Sun Dec 07, 2008 12:08 pm

I'm adding Google Earth .KML file links on each route description in the Online Guidebook. On a route/map page, click the "Google Earth" button to open the route in Google Earth IF YOU HAVE IT INSTALLED.

Here's the location of the new Google buttons:

Here's a sample: Mt. Elbert: NE Ridge Route

Today, I'm working on adding the rest of the Google Earth links to the standard routes.

Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say."

Very cool addition to the site Bill! Just checked out the Elbert example, and think that will be a really handy feature to have!

Great!
I'm adding the Google Earth links for the standard routes now - working my way down through the main routes page.

I now have the Google Earth links out there for the standard routes. I just have to tweek some of the routes because they were hand-traced and I want them to use my GPS data.

Then, I'll go back through and start adding links for the alternate routes.

Outstanding! I have been hoping that Bill would do this for years. Thanks Bill! You've outdone yourself again.

I just finished going through my 14er GPS data and updated the following items for each standard route:
Google Maps
Google Earth .KML files
.GPX Files
.TPO Files

All of these maps and GPS files can be found on the individual routes. Also, if you use any of the downloadable files, be aware that the site copy could be changed at any time.

There are a couple of routes where I didn't have sufficient GPS data, so I filled in the blanks by hand before generating the files.
