Route Milestones (NEW)

Postby BillMiddlebrook » Tue Jan 11, 2011 12:02 pm

Another mod that finally reach the git-r-done list...

I'm in the process of adding "milestones" to the 14er route descriptions. In addition to the actual summit, I've identified several locations on each route that may be helpful "milestones" during a climb and entered the coordinates in the system. Coordinates were obtained from waypoints or tracks made in the field or generated through mapping software and may not be perfect.

Today I'm adding milestones for the standard routes but will get all routes done in the near future. Once I'm done entering data, I'll provide a Google Maps pop-up when we click on the milestones.

When viewing the route description, hover your mouse over the milestone icons to see coordinates of various route locations:

When printing a route or viewing the Print PDF, the coordinates show up in-line:

This is a great addition for the route descriptions. Combining the 'milestones" with coordinates and pictures can be a big help for the inexperienced 14er climbers (like myself) that might need a little extra reassurance they're on the right route!

WGS84 datum. I'll make a note of that on the popups. Thanks!

Aww, c'mon. Hopelessly lost is far more exciting. I'm personally a big believer in the 'keep walking uphill until you run out of mountain, then turn around' school of navigation.

Bill,

Awesome idea. I would like to have coordinates of trailhead parking lots that I can pop in my vehicles GPS seeing I always arrive in the dark.

Thanks, Bernie

You can get the coordinates of each trailhead from this page. I have yet to add the coordinates to the "info window" for each map marker (trailhead), but you can get the coordinates by clicking the "Directions" link on the info window for each marker (TH).

But, yes, I'll also add trailhead milestones to the route descriptions. Thanks!
