These Flash maps make it easier to see routes when there are many on the map. For example, the Decalibron combo route stands out nicely on this map:

Bill, you KNOW you're setting the bar higher and higher for yourself, right?

What's next?...When I hover over the route is it going to show me a video clip of that particular place on the trail? So...ummmmm....yeah...when does the "Virtual Climb" map come out?

Bill, do you use any software to help generate the Flash, or are you hardcore and code it manually? ;)

Manual in Flash CS3. I didn't bother to write code to interact with my DBs because most of it is just a few simple graphic button functions. I have all of route overlay graphics in Photoshop layers so bringing them in is quite easy. Eventually, I'll probably have the Flash file link to the route db information realtime (mileage, elevation gain, etc.). One of the first ones I created, I used PHP/XML in Flash Actionscript to retrieve the route overview data (for the popup), but because I wanted the popup to be fairly small, the data in the DB had to be truncated or revised in most cases. I didn't want to shorted the original data, so I opted for just pasting the info into the Flash objects.

Route Overview Maps (FLASH)

Hi, Bill,

Just curious -- would you consider listing information on the map scale that you use for the overview maps (i.e. -- 1:24,000)? I was thinking in the upper left where you have the routes listed. I'm not sure if you have that information or not, but I thought it might be helpful to some people if they have an instrument that can measure distance according to scale.

Good idea - thanks! When I get a chance, I'll go back through and add it to all of them.

For now, I've added it to the Grays/Torreys map as a sample.
