Very interesting indeed. I wonder if anyone has yet done an in-depth analysis of Hamilton 1999 vs. Hamilton 2015. It would be interesting to see ideas about how Andrew managed to take three days off his "time" despite being 16 years older.

Sean, some of the difficulties are alluded to in the posted article, but if you read his full account of the '99 trip it's amazing he was only 4 days slower than the almost flawless effort that Andrew & crew put together this year.

Actually, I think it was all the stuff that went on during those 16 years that made it possible for Andrew to be really efficient and tough enough to persist. Andrew is 40 now, and that's a good age to be maxing out on endurance.

Endurance is a strange thing. The age of the world record holder in the marathon has ranged from 22 to 35 over the past 30 years, but the trend seems to be towards younger rather than older. The world record in the 1500m freestyle, the longest contested pool event, is almost always held by a "young un" (24 or younger). My best guess of the average age of the Tour de France winner would be high 20's.

Regardless, Andrew's 16 years at the top is absolutely amazing. Sounds like perhaps his fitness was fairly similar both times, but his logistics and experience improved so dramatically that he was able to drop days from his "time". A little luck probably didn't hurt either.
