Time Magazine: Dog "Climbs" Everest

I highly doubt the dog "climbed" Everest (or even "hiked") it, but figured I'd share. The dog is super cute, and apparently also Jamaican. Hope it's not too soon to post a story about dogs on mountains.

Jamaican? Born in the Himalayas? Slick smile but the dog has credibility problems.

3 dogs climbed Aconcagua with us several years ago. They seemed to be living at Nido de Condores, and just followed us on up to the summit.

Actually, the dog just went to basecamp.

The reporter apparently doesn't know the difference between basecamp and the summit.

Yep, I think this pup just went to basecamp. Not unusual though - many dogs go to basecamp. To my knowledge the highest a dog has climbed on Everest is above Camp 2 to the base of the Lhotse Face.

Khumbu base camp is not the summit of Everest. I think the reporter is barking up the wrong tree on this one.

Absolutely right. This is the guy who was at C2 in 2008!

Glad to hear this, actually. I watched this on Today this morning and thought it might not be the best idea for a hike with your pet. :-D
Mountains cast spells on me - Why, because of the way Earth-heaps lie, should I be Chocked by joy mysteriously; stilled or drunken-gay? Why should a brown hill trail Tug at my feet to go? Why should a boggy swale Tune my heart to a nameless tale Mountain marshes know?

Almost everything about that article made my head hurt.

Because the dog was born in the Himalayas, the dog wouldn't get altitude sickness? Great, some day when I have kids, I'll be sure my wife delivers on top of Mt. Evans so they'll never get altitude sickness. Never realized how easy that would be.

The idea of this dog summiting appears to be a bit far-fetched.

I would think that the "It's hiking, not climbing" crowd would be all over this one. According to their proper, legal, and societal rules on the use of this highly restricted word, we should never claim that a dog can "climb", in the same manner that a cat "climbs" curtains, or how a bear "climbs" a tree. Dogs hike, they do not climb. lol.
