thebeav7's Friday Fourteener Project

Postby Sugar Madison » Thu Jul 25, 2013 11:25 pm

Eric Lee is going to attempt to climb as many 14ers as he can on Friday, with a stretch goal of 14. The weather doesn't look too good but he's going to start around 5am and just see what happens.

Figured I'd share his SPOT link in case you're stuck in a cubicle, like me, and want to follow along. :)

When does it end? When he needs sleep? At midnight (the end of Friday)? Or at 5am Saturday?

Sounds awesome...good luck and be safe!

(Trying to figure out the fastest 14 14ers...having difficulty.)

Hmm. Based on about 2 hours per 14er...

Now using the best documentation of 14er splits that I know of (since Doggler doesn't have his 14er combined times page filled out yet AFAIK): http://www.thedogteam.com/14ers-Web_Pages/14ers-Times.html#Lincoln_Group

And assuming Eric is about 25% shorter times than Cave Dog...and that he is following the 3000 foot rule (the challenge might be even harder if not, but becomes completely different).

G+T (1.5 hours per 14er, but requires driving to the next trailhead)
Quandary (2.5 hours and on the way)
Decalibron (4 hours, 1 per 14er...this is the building block around the whole section)
Sherman (3 hours? surely that time must be soft? or do you skip this one?)
Columbia->Missouri (okay no idea how long this would take)
then Huron as #14 (slightly faster than Yale?)

Judging by the SPOT, looks like he started around Summit Lake, thus he's not worrying about the 3k. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Eric has experience with the Huron->Columbia link-up via his successful run of Nolan's last fall.

A little speculation here. Assuming someone is helping him with shuttling?

Jeff, this is my best guess as to Eric's planned route, very similar to yours.

(1/2)Evans->Bierstadt. Start at 5AM from Echo Lake, finish at 8:30AM at Guanella Pass.
(3/4)G->T, Start at 9:00AM at Stevens Gulch, finish at 11:00AM in Chihuahua Gulch.
(5)Quandary, Start 11:00AM, finish 1:00PM from Quandary TH.
(6/7/8/9)Decalibron, Start 1:30PM, finish 3:30PM from Kite Lake TH.
(10)Sherman, Start 4:00PM from Fourmile Creek, finish 6:00PM at Iowa Gulch.
(11/12/13/14) Huron->Oxford, start Winfield, finish wherever you finish at midnight (or at 4:59AM).

Fun project. That he picked today shows that it's more of a journey than a destination. Always cool to see that. Hope it goes well, Eric!

Thanks for posting Sugar - and congrats on HRH.

Is the Spot link working for anyone. Not sure if SPOT is the problem or my outdated browser.

Its not you, it's me. Or maybe it IS your browser. He's about to Bierstadt right now.

He's definitely planning to follow the 3kft rule. This could be interesting on the last peak as it opens the possibility of tagging the summit but not making it down 3k before 24 hrs is up. Go Eric!
