Whitney Lake TH winter access

Postby awilbur77 » Mon Nov 18, 2013 10:21 am

Is there access to the Whitney Lake TH in the winter? I'm thinking of headed up this weekend to take a crack at Whitney Peak. I have a Jeep, so road conditions are less of a concern than say a gate blocking a closed road for winter.

Last year, FS 703 was closed on November 30 -- I did Whitney the day before, via the Holy Cross City road. However, last year was exceptionally dry, and there's a good chance the road is closed already. The gate about a quarter mile in from the turnoff from US 24.
So pleas'd at first the towering Alps we try,
Mount o'er the vales, and seem to tread the sky,
Th' increasing prospects tire our wand'ring eyes,
Hills peep o'er hills, and Alps on Alps arise!

Good info... thanks. Now, I will be sure to have a "plan B" in case the road is closed already.

Just confirmed that FS 703 is open until 11/22, which means I may be taking a comp day from work on Wednesday and trying to get this before both the road closure and the Thursday storm. Anyone interested in joining me up there?
