Postby Dad Mike » Tue Jul 03, 2012 11:52 am

Anyone have any information on a route up Precipice Peak. I can't find anything on 13ers.com or summitpost.

Thanks...Mike

Although, I haven't climbed it, I do have some idea on how to climb approach the peak. From my understanding, you start from West Cimarron Road (the same for approaching Coxcomb) at ~10,700, climb up a gully to the south of the peak, class 2 maybe some very short sections of class 3. Then climb through some Hodoos near the ridge to the summit. Also, I think there are two summit blocks. The ugly hard one is not the true summit. Hope that helps. Expect nothing harder than class 3 with careful route finding. LOJ advertises the peak as 2+.

It used to have a SP page with a decent description from Aaron Johnson. Guess not anymore.

Mike:

Derek is spot on. I climbed it over Memorial Day weekend. Huge bang for the buck and a very short hike from the West Cimarron TH. The gully will be due east and obvious from the trailhead. Stay on the north side of the creek, even though bushwacking will be steep and the deadfall is thick. The drainage splits and you will want to take the ridge that splits it, staying on the crest. This will take you to treeline, and the route is easy to the south ridge. You then pick up a use trail on the ridge which will take you through a notch between two cool gendarmes. The rest of the way weaves through some very cool rock and hoodoos. Enjoy!
