Horseshoe conditions

Post by Eph 2 5 »

I've seen the trip report of the Boudoir Couloir climb from last weekend, but I was wondering if anyone knows what the snow condtions are like on the standard route up Horseshoe via the Horseshoe/Peerless saddle. It looked like there was quite a bit of snow leading up to the saddle, but I couldn't tell if it could be avoided or if it could be easily ascended without crampons. I'm also not sure of the snow conditions for the rest of the route below the saddle. Thanks a lot for your help.

There is a LOT of snow between the TH road and the saddle. The standard route would only require snowshoes, and an early start time to avoid postholing. Last weekend on my descent, I took a sharp left coming off the ridge leading up to the saddle and headed straight for the road. I found a large enough block of snow without trees that held our party of 3 up all the way back to the road- no postholing. I have a picture of that , but I am at work now.

I was one of the guys from the Boudoir TR. Snow is close to unavoidable from the TH to the road turnoff and for the first section of the old mining road, but once you get a little higher it almost disappears for a while. It might be possible to pick your way up to the Horseshoe-Peerless saddle on rocks. If not, the snowslopes are mellow and if you start early all you'll need are microspikes.
“There are two kinds of climbers: those who climb because their heart sings when they’re in the mountains, and all the rest.” - Alex Lowe

"There have been joys too great to describe in words, and there have been griefs upon which I cannot dare to dwell; and with those in mind I say, 'Climb if you will, but remember that courage and strength are nought without prudence, and that a momentary negligence may destroy the happiness of a lifetime. Do nothing in haste, look well to each step, and from the beginning think what may be the end.'" - Edward Whymper

Thanks SurfnTurf,

So it sounds like Leavick is as far as you can drive right now; is that right?

As of Saturday, yep. Buncha snowy slushy mess past Leavick when we went.
