Planning Summer Climb up Wheeler Peak. Anyone wanna join?

Post by BryanROfromTX »

Whats up everybody.

I was in Santa Fe this spring for the fresh snow and snowboarded ski santa fe for a few days. Now I want to return to this area for summer climbing.

Wheeler peak is on my list, and any addition to the group would be awesome. I didn't make it to TAOS because of all the snow, so any
information about the climb or need to knows or best routes... I would highly appreciate it.

Oh yea, And I'm considering the trip to be around Late August or September ? Before the snow but after the rain is what I'm going for.

And also when its the Hottest in Austin, TX too. I also try to get out of Texas in Late August when its 105 daily.

I was thinking about doing Wheeler around the same time frame. I skied Taos Ski Valley 2 years ago and got a good look at it. I live in Kyle and work in Austin. Which route were you wanting to do? Zac

Bull of the Woods is a beautiful, nice long hike, and great for backpacking. A lady passed us on it running to the top, but I don't think I'd want to be on this trail all day (up and down). The Williams Lake Trail is short but a steep rocky trudge up. If you are just looking to summit it might be an option, and is day hikeable. Horseshoe lake looked like a beautiful approach, though I haven't done it. Best of luck!

My favorite route up Wheeler is to do the Williams Lake Cirque. From the Kachina lift at Taos, hike up to the top of the lift, hang a left and climb directly up to Kachina Peak. From there it's a great peak bagging and ridge run (up to 3rd class). Lake Fork Peak, Pt. 12819, Pt. 12,728, Simpson Peak, and then Wheeler. Descend down the Williams Lake route. It'll take about 8 hours at a medium pace. You'll bag 3 of the top 10 peaks in New Mexico.

Another great route is the Toas Cone Route. From the East Fork Trailhead, you would climb Taos Cone, Red Dome, Old Mike, Simpson Peak, and Wheeler. You can then descend down past Horseshoe Lake and swing back around to the East Fork Trailhead.

Horseshoe Lake via the Middle Fork Trailhead is a good one. To make it a loop, there is an unmaintained trail that you can take back to Middle Fork Lake and then on back down to the trailhead.
